Vastu Tips for Home Interiors That Don't Compromise on Style.

Luxury bedroom interior design by Entrust Interior Designers Bengaluru

Vastu Shastra is one of the most common considerations Bangalore homeowners bring up in their very first design conversation and one of the most misunderstood. Many assume following Vastu principles means giving up a modern aesthetic altogether: heavy wooden furniture, fixed colour schemes, rigid layouts. At Entrust, we've designed dozens of homes that honour Vastu guidelines while still feeling sleek, contemporary, and entirely personal. Here's how the two can work together.

Vastu Isn't a Style — It's a Layout Philosophy

The biggest misconception is that Vastu dictates how a room looks. In reality, most Vastu principles are about where things are placed the direction a bed faces, which corner holds the kitchen, where water elements sit in relation to the entrance. None of this restricts your choice of colour palette, furniture style, or finish. A perfectly Vastu-compliant home can be minimalist, maximalist, industrial, or classic — the placement principles simply sit underneath whatever aesthetic you choose.

Room-by-Room Vastu Guidelines, Simplified

Main Entrance — Ideally faces north, east, or northeast. If your apartment's entrance faces another direction, a well-lit entryway with a thoughtfully placed mirror is a widely followed balancing measure.

Kitchen — Traditionally placed in the southeast corner. If your fixed layout puts it elsewhere, positioning the stove so the cook faces east is a common adjustment that needs no structural change.

Master Bedroom — Southwest is considered ideal. Regardless of the room's direction, sleeping with your head toward south or east is the most widely followed recommendation.

Living Room — Best placed north, east, or northeast. Furniture arranged to avoid blocking the entrance-to-home path is a common Vastu-friendly layout choice.

Balancing Vastu With Modern Design Choices

Almost every popular modern design element can be adapted rather than avoided:

  • Open-plan kitchens can still follow the "cook facing east" principle through stove placement alone
  • Statement mirrors can be positioned in the living or dining area (traditionally auspicious in the north) rather than the bedroom
  • Neutral, minimalist palettes already align closely with Vastu's emphasis on calm, uncluttered spaces

"Most of our clients come in expecting a trade-off between style and Vastu. In practice, the two rarely conflict it's almost always a matter of thoughtful placement, not compromise on design."

When Structural Vastu Isn't Possible

In apartment living, you often can't change a building's fixed structure. In these cases, simple correctives strategic mirror placement, specific colour zones, or minor furniture repositioning are the standard recommendation, and fold easily into a design plan without affecting your chosen aesthetic.

Our Approach

When clients ask us to factor in Vastu, we treat it like any other design constraint a fixed electrical point, a load-bearing wall. It's simply one more input shaping the layout, not a limitation on the final look. The result is a home that feels intentional on every level: visually, and energetically.
